Caption: Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Chicken (poultry) louse (Menopon gallinae). Commonly found on domesticated chickens and guinea fowl, this louse is increasingly noted on migratory birds as well. The chicken body louse is a wingless and flattened chewing louse. It uses two sharp claws to scratch the dermis of the fowl to feed on skin fragments, feathers and cellular debris, causing the host's skin to weep and scab. Infested birds lose weight and hens decrease egg production. Heavy infestations can kill poultry and wild birds. Magnification: x10 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
