Caption: Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Horn fly (Haematobia irritans). The horn fly resembles a house fly but are one half the size and have blood-sucking mouthparts. Both male and female horn flies are blood feeders usually on cattle. Other domestic animals that are affected include horses, sheep, and goats. Adult horn flies spend their entire lives on cattle. Females leave only to lay their eggs in manure that is less than two minutes old. Horn flies are not known to cause disease transmission. Magnification: x4 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
