Caption: Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of grass bagworm moth (Brachycyttarus griseus). The compound eye is composed of numerous facets (ommatidia), each of which contains a surface lens. Beneath each lens are retinal cells, which send nerve signals to the optic nerve. The ommatidia are often hexagonal in shape and are tightly arranged to form a large compound eye. Compound eyes allow for the detection of small movements but are weak in distinguishing fine details. Magnification: x600 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
