Caption: Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of an insect ovary cell. This insect ovary cell is a continuous insect cell line that is a clone (sf9) of the original parent cell line (sf21) that was isolated from ovaries of the Fall Army worm (Spodoptera frugiperda). Spodoptera frugiperda is a moth species that is an agricultural pest on corn and various grass species. Insect cells are able to produce various eukaryotic proteins (recombinant proteins, post-translational protein modifications, protein folding etc.). Sf9 is the most commonly used cell line in biotechnology applications. These cells can be grown in suspension culture or adherent as monolayer. A variety of recombinant proteins can be obtained by utilizing the baculovirus expression system. Sf9 cells are also used to isolate and propagate recombinant baculoviral stocks. Magnification: x1,865 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
