Caption: Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Tsetse fly head (.). Note the prominent proboscis. Tsetse flies are vectors of trypanosomes that cause sleeping sickness (trypanosomiasis). Tsetse flies include all the species in the genus Glossina, which are in their own family, Glossinidae. Tsetse live by feeding on the blood of vertebrate animals and are the primary African insect vectors of trypanosomes. Tryoanosomes cause human sleeping sickness and animal trypanosomiasis (also known as nagana). Tsetse flies include all the species in the genus Glossina, which are generally placed in their own family, Glossinidae. Tsetse have been extensively studied because of their disease transmission. Magnification: x8 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
