Caption: Trachea (windpipe) with pollen grains, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). When airborne particles such as pollen grains are breathed in through the nose or mouth, they can cause asthma or hayfever (allergic rhinitis). The surface of the trachea is made up of cells with hair-like cilia (beige). Together with mucus produced by goblet cells (yellow, smooth regions), these cilia serve to trap airborne particles and, by beating upwards in a wave-like motion, remove foreign matter from the airways and lungs.
