Caption: Soil research. Soil scientist examining a soil aggregate coated with glomalin, a soil protein she identified in 1996. Glomalin is a glycoprotein produced in large quantities on the hyphae and spores of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, in soil and in plant roots. It stores carbon within its molecular structure and permeates organic matter, binding it to silt, sand, and clay particles. This forms clumps of soil granules called aggregates, which add structure to soil, and keep stored soil carbon from escaping.
