Plant leaf parenchyma cellulose walls (Ohia Lehua leaf; Metrosideros polymorpha), coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Ohia Lehua is Hawaii's most abundant native tree. It is often the first tree life to appear after a lava flow. It can survive in a many environments, including elevations between 1,000 and 9,000 feet above sea level. It is a hardwood that was used by ancient Hawaiians to carve temple idols, canoes, poi bowls and spears. Magnification: x140 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
