Caption: Olive tree leaf trichome (Olea europaea), coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Plant trichomes are fine epidermal outgrowths that have diverse structure and function. Examples of plant trichomes are hairs, glandular hairs, scales, and papillae. The olive tree leaf surface has scale-like, peltate trichomes that often overlap. Shown here is one trichome on the leaf surface. These leaf trichomes prevent evaporative water loss during dry or windy conditions. They help the olive tree to survive in the hot and seasonally dry climates. Often trichomes are used for plant protection from insects. Magnification: x140 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
