Caption: Pear fruit parenchyma cells (Pyrus sp), coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). A pear is a pomaceous fruit produced by a tree of the genus Pyrus. The pear is classified within Maloideae, a subfamily of the family Rosaceae. Shown here are parenchyma cells deep within the pear fruit. A major distinction of this fruit is the occurrence of lignified cells (sclereids) known as grit or 'stone cells'. Pears contain B-complex vitamins (such as Vitamin B2, riboflavin), vitamin C, calcium and phosphorus. Magnification: x34 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
