The rufous hummingbird is well-known for its aggressive defence of flowers and feeders, even against species many times its own size. It is a relatively small and compact species, with short wings, a tail that tapers to a point, and a slender, straight, black bill. Hummingbirds have the highest metabolism of any homoeothermic animal. Magnification: x23 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
