Caption: Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of DNA purification microchip. Highly purified DNA is required for use in biosensors or biochips. Silicon chip surfaces can be constructed by standard photolithography and microfabrication techniques. This silicon surface has been etched to created 10 x 10 micron pillars. These pillar surfaces can be used to bind DNA for purification with follow-up DNA amplification using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Purified DNA can effectively be used in DNA amplification-based biosensors and biochips. Applications for these biosensors and biochips include: genetic screening, disease diagnosis and new drug development. Magnification: x100 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
