Caption: Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Activated carbon. Activated carbon is charcoal that has been treated with oxygen to expose millions of tiny pores between carbon atoms. Activated carbon is usually derived from charcoal and high-porosity biochar. It is also called activated charcoal or activated coal and is a general term that designates carbon material primarily derived from charcoal. The opening of tiny pores increases the surface area of the carbon. These micropores provide superb conditions for adsorption to occur. Activated charcoals are widely used to adsorb odorous or colored substances from gases or liquids. When certain chemicals pass next to the carbon surface they attach to the surface and are trapped. Activated carbon has become the treatment of choice for many poisonings, and other decontamination methods for binding of the toxin to prevent stomach and intestinal absorption.
