Caption: Light micrograph of crystals of human interferon (IFN). Interferons are a family of glycoproteins produced by many cell-types in response to certain stimuli, notably virus infection. Interferon released from virus-infected cells binds to receptors on neighbouring cells and induces an anti-viral state, possibly through the inhibition of viral protein or nucleic acid synthesis. IFN also inhibits cell growth (hence its application in treatment of cancers) and exerts selective effects on protein synthesis and the immune response. Magnification: X 160 at 35mm size.
