Caption: Male dotterel. Close-up of a male dotterel (Charadrius morinellus) sitting on a nest on the Cairngorm plateau. Dotterels (Charadrius morinellus) breed on mountain plateaus such as the Scottish highlands and the Alps. They nest in a bare ground scrape (shallow depression) and lay two to four eggs. The male dotterel is primarily responsible for incubating the eggs and looking after the chicks. Photographed in the Cairngorms National Park, Scottish Highlands, in June.
