Caption: Bioprinter technology. Bioprinter nozzle spraying a mixture of living cells and polymer fluid. The technique, known as 'pressure assisted spinning' uses three inkjet needles nested inside one another to seperately deliver cells, a viscous polymer and pressurised air. A small electric field is applied that converts the mixture into superfine threads with cells encapsulated within. The thread is woven into a bio-artificial tissue scaffold that could be used in organ replacement surgery or as a 'living' bandage. Photographed in 2009 at the University College London, UK.
