Caption: Andromeda Galaxy (M31, NGC 224), optical image. Andromeda, the nearest large galaxy to our own, is around 140,000 light years across, and located 2.5 million light years away in the constellation of the same name. This image was created over a period of six months, and was assembled from 19 separate panels. It was made with the a 14.5-inch cassegrain telescope and a CCD camera.
