Caption: Quantum computing research. View inside a cryogenic dilution refrigerator which will maintain extremely low temperatures for a five-qubit superconducting quantum computing device. The gold-coloured coaxial cables are used to send inputs and outputs from inside the fridge. Quantum computers, which are under development, are based on quantum mechanics and the principle of representing information using quantum properties. This has the potential to massively increase computing power. A qubit is a quantum bit. IBM scientists in Zurich, Switzerland, working with colleagues at IBM's TJ Watson Lab in New York, are building their own quantum research laboratory.
