Caption: Spore production research. Microbiologist using a light microscope to evaluate spore production by microsclerotia (on screen) from Metarhizium anisopliae fungi. Microsclerotia are tiny compact masses of hardened mycelium (the reproductive part of a fungus) stored with reserve food material. These can become detached and remain dormant until conditions are favourable for growth. Metarhizium anisopliae is a parasitic fungus that grows naturally in soils throughout the world and causes disease in various insects.
