Caption: Brian Derby, British materials scientist. Derby, seen here holding two printer nozzles, is Professor Materials Science at the University of Manchester, UK. His research interests include novel manufacturing methods and 3D printing. In 2005 he developed a technique to print human skin cells from an inkjet printer. Bioprinters such as this could one day be used to 'print' organs and tissues for transplant surgery or as 'living' bandages. Photographed in 2008.
