Caption: Healthy and diseased wheat (Triticum sp.). Healthy wheat heads (darker) compared to ones infected with Fusarium graminearum fungus (lighter). The infected heads show symptoms of scab. Fusarium graminearum, also known as Gibberella zeae, is a plant pathogen and agricultural pest that causes wheat head blight disease. Fusarium head blight devastates wheat and barley (Hordeum vulgare) crops causing billions of dollars of losses worldwide each year. Infection causes the kernels to shrivel and contaminates the remaining grain with mycotoxins. These toxins cause vomiting, liver damage, and reproductive defects in livestock and are harmful to humans through contaminated food.
