Caption: Berlandier's hedgehog cactus, Echinocereus berlandieri has long been incorrectly known as E. blankii. The solid purple flowers that lack a white throat are distinctive and easily separates this species from its similar appearing relatives. This sprawling plant inhabits mesquite thickets in south Texas near the Rio Grande, extending south into Nuevo Leon and Tamaulipas, Mexico.
