Caption: The cardinal penstemon, Penstemon cardinalis, had a limited distribution in the Guadalupe and White Mountains of TX and adjoining NM. The golden hairs at the corolla's mouth and tiny petal lobes are distinctive. The blue-green leaves are large and fleshy. Penstemons are sometimes called beard tongues because of the hairy staminoid that is present in the flowers of most species.
