Caption: Old Plainsman, Hymenopappus scabiosaeus var. artemisiifolius. A tall and conspicuous plant of the tall grass prairies. The paper-like bracts subtending the flower clusters wither as the flowers mature. Some authorities separate H. scabiosaeus and artemisiifolius as two distinct species. It is commonly seen over much of the Plains states south to the southeast and eastern half of Texas. Photo taken Dallas County, TX.
