Caption: Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) pollen grain, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). The pollen grain has two air-filled, wing-like bladders (pink), which are extensions of the pollen grain's wall. These 'wings' help the wind-dispersed pollen to float on the air. Pollen grains are the male gametes (sex cells) of a plant. Magnification: x1740 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
