Caption: Blood clot, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Deformed red blood cells trapped within the fibrin mesh of an old blood clot. Clots are formed in response to cardiovascular disease or injuries to blood vessels. As a clot ages, the normally concave-shaped red blood cells (erythrocytes) begin to deform into more crenated star-like forms known as echinocytes or burr cells. Magnification: x3300 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
