Caption: Blood clot, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Red blood cells trapped within the fibrin mesh of a fresh blood clot. Clots are formed in response to cardiovascular disease or injuries to blood vessels. As a clot ages, the normally concave-shaped red blood cells (erythrocytes) begin to deform into more crenated star-like forms known as echinocytes or burr cells (lower left and upper right). Magnification: x2400 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
