Caption: Particle detector. View of the prototype Transition Radiation Tracker (TRT). This is part of the ATLAS detector for the planned Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, the European particle physics laboratory. The TRT is composed of a 'wheel' made of 16 rows each of 600 straws. Each straw is a hollow tube filled with xenon gas and a central wire electrode. Between the rows of straws are foils of polypropylene. Charged particles hitting the foils cause a characteristic emission of radiation (typically X-rays) along their line of flight. The TRT will detect this radiation and its direction of travel, thus revealing the particle's identity and velocity.
