Caption: Eye damage caused by diabetes. Computer artwork of a cross-section through a human eye affected by diabetic retinopathy. Diabetic retinopathy is caused by damage to the blood supply of the retina, the light-sensitive internal membrane that lines the back of the eye. This can lead to fibrosis, the formation of excess fibrous connective tissue, which can cause the retina to detach (patchy areas). This condition occurs as a complication of diabetes. Haemorrhages (bleeding) may also occur, caused by blood leaking from blocked capillaries. This results in a reduction of blood flow to areas of the retina. Retinopathy impairs sight and can lead to blindness.
