Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Facial fat necrosis. 1-month-old girl with subcutaneous fat necrosis (SFN, red area) of the face. SFN is a rare form of fatty tissue inflammation occurring in newborns. It can be caused by perinatal stress, local trauma, hypoxia (oxygen deficiency) and hypothermia (decreased body temperature), but can also be idiopathic (arising from an unknown cause). This case was caused by antenatal anaemia in the mother. SFN usually clears up by itself and does not reoccur.
