Caption: Challenger disaster, crew emergency training session. Footage of members of the crew taking part in a training session for mission STS-51-L, flown by the Space Shuttle Challenger on 28 January 1986. The shuttle disintegrated just over a minute after launch, killing all seven on board. The members of the crew were US astronauts Ellison Onizuka, Judith Resnik, Michael J. Smith, Dick Scobee, Ronald McNair, US engineer Gregory Jarvis, and US high school teacher Christa McAuliffe. The crew selection for this mission took place in 1985. This footage shows all seven crew members and one alternate member training in the use of inflatable rafts to be used in emergency and in the case of the shuttle ditching in the ocean. Mission commander Dick Scobee opens the raft, while those watching are (left to right): Barbara Morgan, Ellison Onizuka, Ronald McNair, Christa McAuliffe, Michael J. Smith, Judith Resnik, and Gregory Jarvis. Barbara Morgan was the alternate for Christa McAuliffe; both had been selected as part of the Teacher in Space Project. Morgan later became a professional astronaut in her own right.
