Caption: Human brain and skull, computer artwork. The human brain occupies a relatively large volume within the skull compared to other primates. The outer surface is seen here, with the folds (sulci) that give it a large surface area. Most of the visible area of the brain is the cerebrum where conscious thought takes place, but at lower left are two more primitive brain regions, the cerebellum and the brain stem. These are involved in autonomic processes, such as breathing, motor control and sensory perception.
