Caption: Bulging eye and sagging lower eyelid in a patient with Graves' ophthalmopathy. This is an autoimmune disorder that affects the eye socket and causes bulging eyes, an inability to completely close the eyelids, a dysfunctional lacrimal (tear-producing) gland and inflammation and oedema (swelling) of the muscles surrounding the eyeball. Treatment includes drugs to suppress thyroid activity and surgery to reform the eyelids and relieve pressure around the eye.
