Caption: Treated Graves' ophthalmopathy. Patient with Graves ophthalmopathy after surgery, which corrected sagging eyelids and relieved pressure around the eye sockets. Graves' ophthalmopathy is an autoimmune disorder that causes bulging eyes, an inability to completely close the eyelids, a dysfunctional lacrimal (tear-producing) gland and inflammation and oedema (swelling) of the muscles surrounding the eyeball. Treatment includes drugs to suppress thyroid activity and surgery to reform the eyelids and relieve pressure around the eye.
