Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Insecticide research. Researcher retrieving a jar of red flour beetles (ribolium castaneum) from an incubator. The beetles are bred in a mixture of flour and yeast, in jars covered with a mesh for air circulation. These beetles are a pest of stored grain and grain products, causing large economic losses. They can quickly become resistant to insecticides. This research is studying the development, physiology and genetics of this beetle, in an attempt to develop more effective insecticides and control methods.
