Caption: Ammonia and plant growth experiment. Researcher monitoring ammonia levels in an experiment on the effects of pollutant gases on plant growth. The main gas being studied is ozone, but the effects of ammonia are also being studied. Plants are sensitive to airborne nitrogen, but the effects of gaseous ammonia differs from ammonium and nitrate ions in rain. This meadow is part of a diverse conservation area, in which the effects of ozone on a wide variety of plants and soil organisms are studied. Photographed at Keenley Fell, Allendale, Northumberland, UK.
