Caption: Alfred Velpeau (1795-1867). 1867 illustration of the French anatomist and surgeon Alfred Armand Louis Velpeau. Velpeau published over 340 titles on obstetrics, surgical anatomy, embryology, and operative medicine, many of which were translated into English. He also provided the first description of leukaemia and became the leading surgeon in Paris. He was an admired teacher and professor of clinical surgery but considered the use of anaesthetics as absurd, and disagreed with Charles Darwin's theory of evolution.
