Caption: Chimborazo volcano, 19th century artwork. This inactive stratovolcano is the highest peak in Ecuador. Its summit is at an elevation of 6,268 metres above sea level, and the volcano itself rises 2,500 metres above the surrounding Andean highlands. It last erupted in around 650 AD, though its history dates back at least 35,000 years.
