Caption: Stem cell protector drug. Computer graphic of the structure of a molecule of Stem Cell Protector (SCP), a bone marrow drug for anticancer therapy. This genetically engineered drug, known also as BB-10010, was developed by British Bio-technology Group in Oxford. The protein molecule contains 69 amino acids. Here, in ribbon representation, its structure is colour-coded: purple (alpha-helix); yellow (beta-sheets); white (random coil). SCP protects the bone marrow in cancer patients under- going chemotherapy. Chemotherapy kills tumour cells plus healthy bone marrow cells. SCP lowers these side-effects of chemotherapy and may prevent the need for bone marrow transplants.
