Caption: Bedsore. Close-up of a stage III decubitus ulcer (pressure/bed sore) at the base of a patient's spine. Bedsores can occur when a patient is immobile, putting prolonged pressure on an area of the body. The pressure restricts the blood supply, which over time can lead to necrosis (death) of the surrounding tissue. By stage III the necrosis extends into the subcutaneous tissue, but not into fascia. If untreated then the sore will reach stage IV, where necrosis extends through the fascia into structures such as bone and muscle.
