Caption: DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) molecule, coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM). This image was taken using a technique called rotary shadowing. The DNA sample was placed in a vacuum and sprayed with platinum. The metal is then vapourised at very high temperatures while the sample is rotated, leaving a thin coating on the sample. When the DNA is placed in the electron microscope the electrons are deflected by the metal producing an image with strong contrast. DNA contains sections, called genes, which encode the body's genetic information. Genes determine each cell's structure, function and behaviour.
