Caption: Pean demonstrating artery clamping, 1880s. Illustration of French surgeon Jules-Emile Pean (1830-1898, second from left) demonstrating his new technique of clamping arteries, being performed on a female patient undergoing surgery. The surgery is taking place at the Saint-Louis hospital in Paris, France. Pean was one of the most eminent surgeons in 19th-century France. This engraving is based on an 1887 painting by Henri Gervex (1852-1929). The painting is titled 'Le Docteur Pean enseignant a l'Hopital Saint-Louis sa decouverte du pincement des vaisseaux' (also called 'Avant l'operation', Before the Operation). The original is held at the Musee d'Orsay, Paris, France.
