Caption: Blue and green flashes at sunset. Montage sequence of five images showing the Sun setting (top to bottom) with the green flash phenomenon forming at the top of the solar disc. Green flash is an optical phenomenon that occurs when the atmosphere causes the light from the sun to separate out into different colours. The first image in the sequence (top) shows this flash as a blue colour. The second and third images show the flash as a green colour. The distorted shape of the Sun is due to atmospheric refraction of the sunlight. Photographed over the Atacama Desert in northern Chile.
