Caption: Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Cotton aphid (Aphis gossypii) on an hibiscus leaf. Also called the melon aphid it is commonly associated with outbreaks on cotton in the Southeast. This insect has many generations per year and is often resistant to insecticides. This aphid carries an isometric virus which causes cucumber mosaic disease in cucumber and tobacco plants. Magnification: x11 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
