Caption: Stroke, coloured magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) brain scans. This is a haematoma (bleeding in the brain), in a 54-year-old male patient. The scans are a series of axial sections across the brain, showing the central ventricles (yellow). The blue/white region is an area of internal bleeding, or haemorrhage. Stroke, or cerebrovascular accident (CVA), is brain damage caused by the interruption of the brain's blood supply or by the leakage of blood through blood vessel walls. Strokes vary in severity but can result in long-term paralysis, coma and death.
