Caption: Alzheimer's disease, brain specimen. This is a frontal (coronal) section through the brain, with the base at bottom, and the ventricular spaces at centre. Compared to a normal brain, this brain shows signs of atrophy and damage from the condition. Alzheimer's is a neurodegenerative disease and a common cause of dementia in the elderly. It is caused by the formation of protein plaques in the brain, which kill surrounding neurons. The cause of these plaques is not known and there is no cure.
