Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Collapsed spine in osteoporosis. 88-year-old woman with severe kyphoscoliosis (curvature of the spine) as a result of osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a degenerative bone disease in which bone mass is reduced. This leads to an increased risk of fractures. Here the vertebrae of the spine have collapsed as a result, causing the spine to curve. Kyphoscoliosis consists of both lateral (side-to-side) curves (scoliosis) and dorsal (front-to-back) curves (kyphosis). Severe cases are usually treated with surgery to insert a metal support to keep the spine in a straight line.
