Caption: Arthritic foot and healed fracture. Lateral X-ray of the foot of a 71-year-old woman with osteoarthritis. A healed fracture of the tibia and fibula (leg bones) can also be seen (upper centre). Osteoarthritis is a degenerative disorder in which the joint loses its smooth cartilage lining causing the bones to rub against each other. This can be seen here as there are no gaps between the bones of the ankle, leg and heel. This leads to pain, swelling, stiffness and deformity. Treatment involves reducing the symptoms with painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs. In severe cases, the patient may undergo surgery.
