Caption: Lymphocytic thyroiditis. Light micrograph of a section through a thyroid gland that has been punctured, resulting in lymphocytic thyroiditis. This is an abnormal immune response in which the lymphocytes (a type of white blood cell) do not recognise the thyroid as being part of the body and attack it, causing swelling and inflammation. The thyroid is an endocrine gland found in the neck, responsible for the production of hormones controlling the body's metabolism. The nuclei of the cells are blue. Papanicolaou stain. Magnification: x110 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
