Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Bunion. Foot of a 73-year-old man with a severe bunion (hallux valgus, upper left) and a hammer toe (centre) on the second toe. Bunions are swellings of the joint between the big toe and the first metatarsal bone. They cause the base of the big toe to project outwards and the tip to point inwards. Hammer toe is a deformity of the middle joint of the second, third, or fourth toe causing it to be permanently bent, resembling a hammer. Both these conditions are thought to be caused primarily by ill-fitting shoes. Both can be corrected surgically.
